About Ken
Ken Mellott is a U.S. Air Force Academy graduate, former Air Force pilot and intelligence officer, and editor of VeteransLife Magazine.
He brings decades of real-world experience to his debut works: On Broken Wings, a memoir about military aviation, father/son relationships, faith, and PTSD recovery; and The Signature Series, a four-book Christian thriller series exploring intelligent design through the lens of conspiracy and danger.
Before turning to writing, Ken’s career spanned multiple disciplines—from flying and intelligence operations for the Air Force to strategic planning, owning a photography studio, and working as a stockbroker. This breadth of experience informs both his memoir’s authenticity and the high-stakes worlds of his fiction, where scientists face down cabals determined to suppress evidence of design in the natural world.
Ken has been married for forty-two years and is the father of two and grandfather of one.
He lives in Colorado Springs, where he once competed in trail races, Spartan obstacle courses, and Olympic-style archery before health challenges redirected his energy toward the page.
Why I Write
I never planned to become an author at seventy-one. For most of my life, I was the guy in the cockpit, running intelligence operations, providing investment advice, or capturing moments through a camera lens—always moving, always trying different things. But a few years ago, something shifted. I felt a calling I couldn’t ignore: to share my story.
On Broken Wings came first, born from a deep conviction that my journey through military service, personal crisis, and eventual healing might help others find faith—both in themselves and in God. PTSD is a silent battle too many veterans fight alone, and if my story can bring awareness, hope, or even just a sense of “you’re not alone,” then the vulnerability of putting it on paper was worth it.
The Signature Series sprang from a different kind of passion—one I’ve carried for decades. I’ve always been captivated by the staggering complexity and beauty of life and the overwhelming evidence and logic of a creator. When I realized that scientists who dare to follow that evidence are often ostracized and ridiculed, the stories I explore practically wrote themselves. These thrillers let me explore the question that’s fascinated me for years: What if the truth about design is worth killing for?
When I’m not writing about pilots who’ve lost their way or scientists on the run, you’ll find me enjoying life with my wonderful wife, hanging out with friends, working at a foodbank, and visiting with my children and grandson as often as I can—marveling at how a kid can make you see the world fresh again.
My competitive days of obstacle courses, trail races, and archery tournaments are behind me now, but the drive to push limits, test courage, and pursue truth hasn’t faded. I’ve just found a new arena: on the pages of my books.
If my stories challenge you, inspire you, or simply keep you turning pages late into the night, I’ve done what I set out to do.
